On a non-altered version of Windows Live Messenger every contact in your Contacts List has a two part name; The first part in black being their user name (or short name when you changed it), and the second one either in grey being the message they have to tell every contact in the Contacts List or in blue underlined the track the contact is listening to. The second part is called the PSM (Personal Message).

The user name and personal message combined can become annoyingly long at some contacts. Although Windows Live Messenger makes it possible to change the first part of the contact's name into something shorter, the second part cannot be deleted or shortened on a default Windows Live Messenger. Messenger Discovery makes it possible to completely remove all of the contacts' personal messages by using the function "Disable contact personal messages and now playing messages". If you turn this function on, it will remove all of the contacts' personal messages making your Contact List look much cleaner. Combining this with the short name giver built-in WLM standard makes the Contact List even more clean, efficient and much less annoying since there would be limited emoticons (none if you don't put emoticons in the short names).

[edit] Location

The location for turning of the function would be Settings > Windows Live Messenger > General Settings, it's the third (check) box from below.
