[edit] How To Unistall Completely Msg Discovery.

If you get an error with Msg Discovery, in the 90% of cases, the better way to solve it is to remove completely the software and reinstall it. Here there is the better way to do it:

Close MDL and WLM (Windows Live Messenger)

  • Closing MDL (Settings -> Other -> Advanced to active exit button then in the tray menu right click mdl icon select "exit"

or Press ctrl + alt + del then shutdown messenger discovery.exe)

  • Close WLM (exit it from system tray menu) Be sure other WLM accounts are closed too.

Removing MDL

  • Start, Control Panel, open Add or Remove Program.
  • In the current list find (MessengerDiscovery Live) then select "remove".


Removing MDL folder and registry entries

  • Remove MDL folder in "C:\Program Files\MessengerDiscovery\"
  • There are two ways to remove the registry keys : one manual(for expert users) and another automatic (easier and 100% efficient).

Removing registry keys with manual:

  • Start > Run > type regedit
  • Find these keys then delete (if they still there):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\iAvatars.com

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ecko_complex

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MessengerDiscovery

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MessengerDiscovery Live

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Matt Holwood

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Matt Holwood


  • Also please check in your messenger folder, that you don't have the following files there left after uninstalling MDL:

(you have to allow to see hidden files under Tools - Folder Options to see those files)

Older MDL versions is winmm.dll and version.dll


Automatic remove keys

  • Download the file at the following address, unzip and launch it simply double clicking
